A friend of ours who saw us (Nekropolis ’22) play live in public settings as well as at our private weekly sessions in our rehearsal space made an interesting observation: To her, we seemed to be taking more musical risks when not performing publicly.
If that is the case, it’s not a conscious decision, but it’s entirely possible. Our particular brand of free improvisation, which we like to call “spontaneous composition,” is something akin to a three-person juggling act on a tightrope. Instead of throwing balls back and forth, we’re throwing musical ideas at each other, all the while walking on the tightrope of rhythm and groove.
This new recording tries to capture the more carefree approach we have when the adults have left the room. And because of that, you might hear the “tightrope” wobble here or there, or hear one of us make a daring save; but you’ll not see somebody fall off or even hit a ball on the ground. We hope listening to this album will be as exciting to you as improvising these pieces was to us.
About the title:
“Eine in Mittäterschaft begangene Übertretung des groben Unfugs” (“an offense of gross mischief committed in complicity”) is a title Udo fell in love with when he saw it in the Münchner Stadtmuseum. It is what the street musicians were charged with who started the so-called “Schwabinger Krawalle” (“Schwabing Riots”) in 1962 – “grober Unfug” plus “übermäßiges Benutzen des Gehsteigs” (“excessive use of the sideway”).
